About the Artwork:

"After dark near the arctic can be a magical time. Especially during the long winter months where darkness extends into day. This darkness provides a perfect canvas for the dramatic light show that is the Aurora Borealis, or northern lights. While these shows usually consist of yellowish green shafts of light, on very rare occasions, a vibrant display of reds, pinks, and even purples will leave the lucky viewers speechless. This is one of those occasions and is enjoyed by a passing orca. I wonder what it is thinking...." by Karen Whitworth

About the Artist:

Born in Oregon and the oldest of 5 children, Karen devoted much of her early years to drawing on any piece of paper she could get her hands on. When her family moved to Alaska she was exposed to a new, raw, and inspiring beauty that encouraged her love for art and nature. During the 20 years she spent in the Last Frontier, the landscape and the animals that resided in it were a constant source of inspiration for her paintings. Today her original art can be found in collections around the world and is featured in several US galleries. From her studio, and even the field, she creates her paintings with a love for light and vibrant color. She now lives in Washington state with her husband, Greg, and two young children where she continues to explore and be inspired by the nature that surrounds her home in the Pacific Northwest.
